MAHASIVARATHRI

Large number of devotees gathering on the banks of the Periyar to pay obeisance to their ancestors during the Mahasivrathri day. The observance of Sivarathri is considered an important ceremony in ensuring the welfare to descendants of the deceased.
The belief behind the significance of performing the ritual is traced to the Ramayana in which  Rama performed the last rites of his friend, Jadayu.
The rituals got off to a start from Monday midnight with a procession (ezhunnellippu) of a caparisoned elephant around the Mahadeva Temple, carrying the idol of Lord Siva.
